The tenitt Neighbourhood Guide: Kreuzberg
Five places. One neighbourhood. A day in Kreuzberg, the tenitt way.
Kreuzberg is difficult to summarise — which is probably the point. Canal-side mornings turn into gallery afternoons, walls become canvases, and some of Berlin’s best restaurants sit comfortably next to Spätis and kebab shops.
Here’s how we’d spend a day.
Coffee and Breakfast — La Maison Berlin
Paul-Lincke-Ufer 17, 10999 Berlin
Part French bakery, part neighbourhood meeting point, La Maison is particularly good when the sun is out and the tables begin to fill the pavement.
Start slowly. Grab a coffee and a croissant and, if the weather allows, take it outside. The stretch around Maybachufer and Paul-Lincke-Ufer is one of those parts of Berlin where sitting around for half an hour somehow becomes part of the plan.
After breakfast — Follow the Landwehrkanal
From La Maison, start walking along Paul-Lincke-Ufer towards Maybachufer and follow the water.
Take your time. Browse the market when it’s running, sit by the canal, cross whichever bridge looks interesting and wander into the smaller streets along the way.
There doesn’t need to be much of a plan — that’s part of Kreuzberg.
Then — KÖNIG GALERIE
Continue towards KÖNIG GALERIE at St. Agnes.
The setting alone makes it worth the trip. The gallery occupies a former church whose monumental spaces now host contemporary painting, sculpture, installations, photography and performance.
It’s one of those places where the building is almost as interesting as the exhibition itself.
On the way — Look up
Kreuzberg’s art doesn’t end when you leave the gallery.
Take a detour through Oranienstraße and around SO36, where murals, graffiti, stickers and constantly changing walls are simply part of the neighbourhood.
Look out for Victor Ash’s Astronaut/Cosmonaut, one of Kreuzberg’s most recognisable murals.
Finally — Trattoria Breda
Finish the day with a late lunch or dinner at Trattoria Breda on Paul-Lincke-Ufer.
Handmade pasta, Italian wine and a relaxed room that feels stylish without trying too hard. When the weather is good, take a table outside and let the afternoon turn into dinner.
